A principle of Earth pressure type seal

The excavation chamber is made filled with excavated soil, and earth pressure of chamber is controlled to be able to oppose the ground and hydlaulic pressure from working face.

Principle

Pressurization control of the face is carried out using the high specific gravity and high viscous slurry corresponding to "cutting face water pressure" and "earth pressure".

In process in which this slurry permeates between the ground particles of cutting face, "mud peremeable film" is formed and face is stabilized by applying pressure there.

Actual result

The slurry shield machine of the "circumferential support type" which Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. developed in 1975, and the "intermediate support type" developed after that is widely adopted as the soil conditions which carry out congestion as what can respond flexibly, and has developed into the super-large caliber type in which a diameter exceeds 14.0m now.
